5 “Killer” Road Trip Films Selected by ‘Wrecker’ Director Micheal Bafaro

XLrator Media will be releasing Wrecker in limited theaters on VOD and iTunes on November 6th. Directed by Micheal Bafaro, and featuring Anna Hutchison and Drea Whitburn, “Best friends Emily and Lesley go on a road trip to the desert. When Emily decides to get off the highway and take a “short cut,” they become the target of a relentless and psychotic trucker who forces them to play a deadly game of cat and mouse.“ Bloody Disgusting caught up with Bafaro who shares his list of 5 “Killer” road trip films with an explanation behind each selection. George Sluizer’s The Vanishing (1988) This is up there with my favourite films of all time. The original Dutch version of The Vanishing is a tight psychological thriller and happens to tell a compelling human drama. From the beginning, the ill-fated couple, Rex and Saskia, are absolutely endearing. When Saskia is abducted during their road trip, Rex spends years obsessively trying to track her down. From the onset, this film has a masterful control over atmosphere, it really gets under your skin. It’s a subtle and creeping feeling that will carry you through to the shocking finale. Stephen Spielberg’s Duel (1971) I can’t make this list without acknowledging one of my favourite childhood films. Duel is one of the films that takes a simple premise and kills it with the execution. This is probably the first film I saw where I realized that being pursued by a psychopath can be a lot more dangerous during the day than at night. Some of the best driving scenes period. Great script by Richard Matheson,...

Exclusive Still, Q&A: “CABIN IN THE WOODS” star Anna Hutchison hits the road in “WRECKER”

While the road thriller is nothing new to the horror genre, one must admit that there are only few driven by female protagonists. Of course, with high-speed chases, hot-running motors and testosterone-fueled stunt work, that side of the horror genre has been primarily targeted at male audiences for decades now. But with Michael Bafaro’s upcoming road thriller, WRECKER, the genre is looking to take a left turn into more diverse and intense territory, putting Drea Whitburn (SUPERNATURAL) and Anna Hutchison (THE CABIN IN THE WOODS) behind the wheel as they face a torturous trucker. With the film currently premiering in Cannes, FANGORIA had the chance to debut a new still from the film (which you can see below) as well as catch up with Hutchison regarding her high-speed return to horror… FANGORIA: How did you first come aboard WRECKER? ANNA HUTCHISON: I was asked by my manager if I wanted to read the script, and I loved it right from the start. I really liked the idea of a female driving film that turns where they have to be really driven and have to find strength. WRECKER is a really female-driven movie and that’s something that really appealed to be right from the beginning, so once I knew that, I was on board. FANGORIA: There’s been a lot of roadbound thrillers in the past that are beloved in the genre: DUEL, JOY RIDE, ROADGAMES, etc. What was it about WRECKER that really made the project stand out to you as an actress? HUTCHISON: I think it was the idea that the females are in the driver’s seat. I watched...

WRECKER? This Exclusive Clip Destroys Her!

DUEL. ROAD GAMES. THE HITCHER. BREAKDOWN. And a whole mess of other movies… Indeed, the cat-and-mouse, big truck vs. little car thriller has been flattened into cinematic road kill over the years, with variations on the theme popping up at least once a year. The reason being is, of course, because the formula almost always works. In Micheal Bafaro’s kinetic new smash-em-up WRECKER, we have two women (as opposed to the usual single male protagonist that is a staple of these sorts of films) driving the lonesome highways in their mustang, looking to get high and party. Instead the ladies (played by Anna Hutchison and Drea Whitburn) somehow piss off an unseen kook in a massive, monstrous tow-truck that proceeds to chase them and chase them and chase them, with mustang murder on his (or her?) mind. WRECKER hits select theaters and VOD on November 6th via XLrator Media, but SHOCK has an exclusive, road-rage soaked clip to tide you over. Check out the mayhem below. Full article:...
